Japanese wooden marquetry dates back to the Heian period and Hakone marquetry was developed in the late Edo period at Hatajuku, a resting station in Hakone.

To make the marquetry, various kinds of wood that have different colors are gathered from all over the country and are dried naturally. Then, they are cut into long sticks to be combined so that the ends make mosaic patterns. Next, the surface of the mosaic is planed away to create thin paper-like shavings, which are pasted on craft works with varnish as a finish.

Marquetry goods as boxes, drawers, trays and coasters are made and secret boxes are popular which can be opened in a certain particular way only.
